Journalists work under constant deadlines, unpredictable schedules, exposure to distressing material, online harassment, financial uncertainty, and the pressure to remain continuously available.

Stress is often treated as an unavoidable part of the profession. But when exhaustion becomes permanent, it can affect judgement, accuracy, relationships, physical health, and the ability to continue working.

Protecting journalists’ wellbeing is therefore both a human responsibility and an editorial priority.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Persistent exhaustion, irritability, difficulty concentrating, disturbed sleep, emotional numbness, and withdrawal from colleagues may indicate that ordinary pressure has become more serious.

Editors should create an environment in which journalists can raise concerns without being labelled weak or unreliable.

Managers are not expected to become therapists. Their responsibility is to recognise risks, respond respectfully, and guide staff towards appropriate professional support.

Make Workflows Healthier

Newsrooms can reduce unnecessary pressure through practical measures:

  • Establish realistic deadlines.
  • Rotate assignments involving distressing material.
  • Avoid expecting responses outside working hours.
  • Conduct supportive debriefings after difficult coverage.
  • Provide regular breaks during prolonged events.
  • Clarify roles during emergencies.
  • Offer access to confidential professional support.

Freelancers and local correspondents should not be excluded simply because they work outside the main newsroom.

Manage Exposure to Disturbing Content

Journalists verifying violent images may repeatedly watch material that audiences see only once. Newsrooms should limit unnecessary exposure, use blurred previews where possible, mute audio during initial review, and divide verification tasks among trained colleagues.

Taking a break does not compromise professional commitment. It helps preserve the concentration necessary for responsible reporting.

Build a Culture of Mutual Support

A healthy newsroom does not wait for a crisis before discussing wellbeing. Regular conversations, peer support, responsible leadership, and clear boundaries can prevent temporary stress from becoming chronic harm.

Journalists are often trained to observe everyone except themselves. Sustainable journalism requires a different understanding: caring for the person behind the reporting is part of protecting the quality and future of the profession.
