Social media platforms are no longer merely channels for publishing news and advertisements. They have become an essential part of public relations and corporate reputation management. Facebook, in particular, offers institutions the ability to communicate directly with audiences, measure their reactions, and respond promptly to questions, complaints, and criticism.

Against this background, an academic study examined how public relations departments at Palestinian telecommunications companies use Facebook as a strategic tool for digital reputation management. The research focused on three major companies: Jawwal, Paltel, and Ooredoo Palestine.

The study, titled “Employing Facebook as a Strategic Public Relations Tool in Digital Reputation Management: A Study of Palestinian Telecommunications Companies,” was conducted by Nawzat Abu Alasal, Yusra Hmouz, and Ahmad Al-Nadi, affiliated with Applied Science Private University, Arab American University, and Yarmouk University.

From Publishing Content to Managing Reputation

The study is based on the significant transformation social media has brought to the relationship between institutions and their audiences. Corporate image is no longer shaped solely through one-way media messages. It is increasingly influenced by daily interaction, response speed, transparency, and the quality of published content.

From this perspective, digital reputation has become one of an institution’s most important intangible assets. It directly affects public trust, consumer decisions, crisis resilience, and the company’s ability to maintain strong relationships with its customers.

The study sought to measure the impact of public relations communication strategies used on Facebook on the digital reputation of Palestinian telecommunications companies. It focused on two main dimensions: media content and digital engagement.

It also examined how these practices affect public perceptions, levels of trust, and the overall corporate image associated with the companies.

Study Methodology

The researchers adopted a descriptive-analytical approach and used two questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale to collect data.

The study sample included:

  • 30 employees working in the public relations departments of Palestinian telecommunications companies.
  • 220 Facebook users.

The total sample therefore consisted of 250 participants. This approach enabled the researchers to combine the perspectives of communication professionals within the companies with public evaluations of the companies’ digital content and online practices.

A High Level of Facebook Use

The findings showed that Palestinian telecommunications companies use Facebook extensively for digital reputation management. The overall average reached 4.16 out of five, equivalent to approximately 83%.

The direct use of Facebook for reputation management ranked first, reaching 88%. This result suggests that telecommunications companies recognise the platform’s importance in institutional communication and in building relationships with their audiences.

Facebook is therefore no longer used exclusively to promote services and commercial offers. It has also become a channel for managing public situations, monitoring customer attitudes, responding to complaints, clarifying information, and maintaining the company’s public image.

Content Shapes Public Perception

The study indicates that the nature of published content significantly influences public attitudes towards an institution. Clear, transparent, relevant, and regularly updated content can strengthen trust. By contrast, delayed responses or failure to address criticism may damage a company’s image, even when its services perform well in other areas.

Digital reputation management is therefore not achieved through frequent posting alone. It depends on the quality of the message, its relevance to the audience’s concerns, and the institution’s ability to manage both positive and negative interactions professionally.

These factors are particularly important in the telecommunications sector because of the daily and direct relationship between companies and customers, as well as the large number of inquiries and complaints relating to services, prices, network coverage, and connection quality.

Dialogue Instead of One-Way Communication

The study emphasised the importance of applying dialogue theory when managing communication through Facebook. This requires institutions to move beyond publishing corporate statements and promotional content towards building genuine, two-way communication that allows audiences to express their views and receive clear and timely answers.

Digital dialogue is a central element in building trust, particularly during crises or when inaccurate information begins to circulate. The more transparent, responsive, and accessible an institution is, the greater its ability to protect its reputation and limit the impact of rumours and negative public perceptions.

Recommendations for Strengthening Digital Reputation

Based on the study’s findings, several practices can help institutions improve their digital reputation management:

  • Developing a clear digital content strategy aligned with public relations objectives.
  • Ensuring transparency when providing information and addressing issues of public concern.
  • Responding quickly to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Strengthening the digital dialogue and crisis-management skills of public relations teams.
  • Analysing audience comments and attitudes instead of relying solely on likes and shares.
  • Balancing promotional content with service-oriented, informative, and educational content.
  • Establishing mechanisms to measure the impact of content on trust and corporate image.
  • Preparing response plans in advance to address rumours and unexpected digital crises.

Conclusion

The study demonstrates that Facebook has become a strategic tool for public relations departments within Palestinian telecommunications companies. Its effective use can positively influence public trust, corporate image, and digital reputation.

Maintaining a positive reputation, however, requires more than simply maintaining an active presence on the platform. It depends on credible content, two-way dialogue, rapid responses, and the ability to listen to audiences and translate their feedback into institutional decisions and improved practices.

Digital public relations should therefore be understood not merely as a promotional function, but as a continuous strategic process aimed at building long-term relationships between institutions and their audiences. At the centre of this process is trust—the most important foundation of any successful corporate reputation.
