On International Women’s Day, we proudly and gratefully remember the pioneering Arab female journalists who have faced immense challenges and reshaped the landscape of journalism, often navigating complex environments filled with obstacles. Their dedication to truth and freedom of expression has come at great personal cost, yet they have played a crucial role in shaping both Arab and international media.
Among these inspiring figures, Rana Sabbagh stands out as one of the pioneers of investigative journalism in the Arab world. Her career has been a journey of perseverance and relentless pursuit of truth, advocating for transparency and accountability despite the many political pressures she encountered.
Rana Sabbagh: A Pioneer of Arab Investigative Journalism
Early Life and Education
Rana Sabbagh was born in Amman, Jordan, in 1963, to a Palestinian father and a German mother. Growing up in a multicultural environment profoundly influenced her career. From an early age, she showed a keen interest in journalism and the pursuit of truth, leading her to study media at the Lebanese American University in Beirut, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1984, majoring in theater with a minor in media studies.
A Groundbreaking Career in Journalism
Sabbagh began her career as an economic and political correspondent and quickly proved her talent, working with major international news agencies and newspapers. She served as a correspondent for The Times of London and Reuters, gaining extensive experience in covering regional and global issues. Her reporting on major events such as the First Gulf War (1990-1991) cemented her reputation as a bold journalist with deep analytical skills in political and economic affairs.
In 1999, Sabbagh made history as the first woman to become editor-in-chief of a daily newspaper in Jordan, leading The Jordan Times. During her tenure, she faced significant political and professional challenges but successfully strengthened the paper’s independence and reinforced its role as a credible and bold news source.
Founding “Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism” (ARIJ)
In 2005, Sabbagh took a major step in transforming investigative journalism in the Arab world by founding “Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism” (ARIJ)—the first nonprofit organization dedicated to investigative journalism in the region. As executive director for 15 years, she played a key role in training and mentoring thousands of Arab journalists in in-depth investigative reporting.
Major Achievements at ARIJ:
✅ Trained over 4,000 journalists and academics across the Arab world.
✅ Oversaw the production of 600+ investigative reports, exposing corruption and mismanagement.
✅ Developed the first Arab investigative journalism handbook, adopted by several universities.
✅ Promoted accountability, transparency, and freedom of expression in Arab media.
Sabbagh faced intense political pressure due to the sensitive nature of ARIJ-supported investigations. However, she remained committed to uncovering the truth and upholding journalism’s role in holding power to account.
Transition to Global Investigative Journalism & Joining OCCRP
After a long and impactful tenure at ARIJ, Sabbagh stepped down in 2019, but her contributions to journalism did not end there. She joined the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)—one of the world’s leading investigative journalism networks specializing in exposing corruption and transnational crime.
Currently, she serves as Senior Editor for the Middle East and North Africa at OCCRP, continuing her work on cross-border investigations that reveal corruption networks. She also supports Arab journalists by equipping them with the tools and expertise needed to navigate complex journalistic challenges.

Throughout her career, Sabbagh has received numerous awards and honors in recognition of her contributions to investigative journalism.
